MUN profs and students at Science Atlantic ChemCon. Thank you MSVU for a great conference

We are all just back from travels in the Maritime provinces of Canada. The Profs (Chris Kozak and Fran Kerton) attended Science Atlantic ChemCon hosted by Mount Saint Vincent University – along with Mike Katz, Chris Flinn and many of our undergraduates.  Memorial will be hosting next year – so do consider paying us a visit.  Jen Murphy and Tim Anderson took part in the Canadian Chemical Crystallography Workshop also held in Halifax.

Then the big event followed  – the 99th CSC in Halifax. Chris, Fran, Jen, Hart and Kaijie gave talks in the green chemistry symposium organized by Chris Kozak and Rob Singer. Tim, Kaijie and Hart also presented posters during the conference. Above are two photos from this conference. Jen Murphy and Kaijie Ni won talk/journal prizes from Green Chemistry and Catalysis Science & Technology. On our last night, we headed to the Halifax Ale House to celebrate our #ChemFam with honorary group member Dr. Louise Dawe from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Funding News :D

Dr. Kerton’s NSERC Discovery Grant has been renewed at $43000 per year for 5 years.

This grant will be used to partially pay the stipends of Yi Liu (PhD), Greg Curtis (MSc), George Margoutides (PhD), Hart Plomer (MSc) and Coralee Ridder (MSc). It is also used to contribute towards the stipends of the following co-supervised students: Jen Murphy (PhD with Hawboldt, Engineering), Valerie Parsons (MSc with Bottaro, Chemistry) and Shafaet Chowdhury (PhD with Kozak, Chemistry).

Thank you to all current and former students who helped produce the results during the last funding period, which allowed the grant to be renewed. Here’s hoping for lots of exciting results during this next 5 year period.

** Dr. Kerton has also received a ‘stopover in a commonwealth country’ travel grant from the RSC, which will cover some of the costs towards a diversion from Hong Kong to Singapore. She will be visiting Hong Kong to attend the Green Chemistry Gordon Research Conference and Singapore to collaborate with Prof. Ning Yan at the National University of Singapore.**

Chris, Fran, Kata, Hua and Jenna attended the Atlantic Inorganic Discussion Weekend in Moncton from March 22-24. We all had a fantastic time and enjoyed 2 or 3 Plenary lectures (some of us missed Prof. Stephan’s talk because we were still en route from Toronto), 3 mixers, several coffee breaks and lots of student/postdoc talks and lectures (about 24 talks and 24 posters were presented). We also got to meet, network and socialize with chemists from Atlantic Canada and further afield. We are already looking forward to the next AIDW, which will probably be held in 2015 somewhere in the region.

Green Solvents for Synthesis

Fran has just attended the conference “Green Solvents for Synthesis” in Boppard, Germany, which was organized by Dechema. She gave a talk on aminocarbohydrates as ocean-sourced renewable feedstocks – focusing on group results using water or ionic liquids as the solvent. It was a good meeting and she got to meet a number of chemists working in this area and the editor of the journal Green Chemistry.

Dr.s at the International Conference on Organometallic Chemistry (ICOMC) and Coordination Chemistry (ICCC)

The profs are continuing their sabbatical travels. Last week they were in Lisbon and this week they are in Valencia.

Lisbon is a beautiful city and they had some time to explore once the ICOMC had finished and before heading to the ICCC in Valencia.

2012 Gordon Research Conference on Green Chemistry

Chris and Fran have just returned from their travels in Europe after attending the GRC on Green Chemistry (in Barga, Italy). This meeting was fantastic in terms of science, location, people……in fact it was probably one of the best conferences we have ever been to! Thank you to all who made it the event it was.

Fran gave a talk on the first morning entitled “Chemical transformations of aminocarbohydrates”, which prompted some good discussion and we’ve come away with lots of great new ideas. Chris and Fran also presented their posters over the course of the week, and got to meet some fantastic people.

Chris presents his poster in Toulouse

Chris, Fran and Justin attended this international conference during the past week. We saw lots of great talks and presented our posters alongside many other delegates……we also ate far too much good food and drank too much wine thanks to the generous hospitality of our hosts. Next time (July 2014) the conference is being held in Ottawa, Canada. The website for the next ISHC is found here.

CSC (Canadian Chemistry Conference) in Calgary

Chris, Fran, Khaled and Nduka have been enjoying the science and Albertan hospitality at the CSC

Chris and Fran spoke in the metal-mediated polymerization symposium organized by Mike Shaver and Paul Hayes. Nduka presented his poster in the same symposium on Sunday evening and Khaled presented his poster in the Industrial division on Monday night.

Thanks to all the organizers and volunteers for a fantastic meeting.
